iOS 17 is no longer receiving security updates because all iPhones on 17 can update to iOS 18.
iOS 16 and iPadOS 17 are still supported.

17.7.3 was only released to iPadOS alongside iOS 18.2

Hey @jonttm, for now I updated end of active support in #6451 for iOS 17 which means it is no longer receiving new features, but still it could continue receiving security patches for all users don't want to update to iOS 18 yet.

iOS 17 won't receive security updates because 17.7.3 is only available for iPadOS (which is a different page on the site). Apple is forcing iPhones on iOS 17 to update to 18.2 for security updates now. iPadOS 17.7.3 is only available because an iPad exists that doesn't support iPadOS 18.

Looking at the list of CVEs at iOS 18.2 vs iPadOS 17.7.3, which appear to be similar, I agree - important security patches (CVE-2024-44225 is a privilege escalation) don't seem to be reaching iOS17 anymore.

I'm considering marking iOS16 similarly, since the last update iOS 16.7.10 didn't include any CVE fixes.

However, it is very likely that Apple will push out some critical/emergency security update down the road for iOS 16 and/or 17, and we might have to bump the date. How about we mark both as unsupported, and put a note that Apple has historically pushed out critical security fixes for unsupported iOS versions, but there's no guarantee of that happening, and as of now - only iOS18 seems to be getting security fixes.

I agree this seems like a good compromise

Unfortunate, but doesn't look like backports are happening currently - there are unpatched security issues in iOS17 (and likely 16?).

Backports will likely happen in the future, but we can't predict them in the absence of clear guidance from Apple, so we have to mark these as unsupported.

See discussion on #6444.

Would it make sense to mark iPadOS 16 as EOL to match?

Yup, changing this issue title to reflect that.
