Default value for identifiers (API)

I have a question regarding the identifiers for the API v1 ( #2080 ):

I'm not very sure, but:

Wouldn't every product have the identifier field in the product page (even if nothing is in it) so that the API Requests in the future would work correctly?

Please correct me if I'm wrong
