How to rename single etcd cluster node safely?

I am aware that I can remove and add the node under the new name, but I have been doing some experiments, and looks like if i just start the existing node under the new name then it just works.

Is this officially supported by etcd or does it just happens to work, and I shouldn't do it?

Each time when etcd gets started, it registers its name to the cluster automatically. So it works by design.
