How does "nested" work?

I've been trying to figure out what the "nested" feature is, but after searching for a while and only finding this [#1206], I still have no idea how it works or what you're supposed to do. I've just set up Linkwarden and Floccus for the first time tonight, so I'm brand new to how this all works.

Is there any documentation on how you use this preferably with some pics as examples? I'm not following the explanation at that link I posted above.

The nested sync feature is only useful if you have multiple profiles. "Nested" refers to the respective local folders of your floccus profiles. Say your bookmarks tree in your current browser looks like this:

• Root
  • Bookmarks Bar
    • Private bookmarks
    • Other stuff
    • Work bookmarks

And now you create two profiles with two different servers in floccus:

• Root
  • Bookmarks Bar - Profile 1
    • Private bookmarks
    • Other stuff
    • Work bookmarks - Profile 2

The nested sync setting now controls whether "Work bookmarks" should show up on the server associated with Profile 1. It's very much an edge case.

Thank you for the response! Let me see if I am understanding this correctly:

1. Personal Profile > sync Bookmarks Toolbar with Linkwarden
2. Work Profile (different browser) < only pull down the Work Bookmarks (which is actually Work Profile's Bookmark Toolbar) folder from Linkwarden.

That way my Personal Profile is the Main, and the Work stuff will live in a subfolder inside the Main profile and will populate the Bookmarks Toolbar on the Work account, yeah? So I'm assuming if I want something on both my Work Profile's Bookmarks Toolbar, and also my Personal... it will have to live on my Personal Toolbar AND in that folder I've made for the Work Profile (if I don't want to have to dig into a subfolder in my Personal Profile) right?

Is there any way to preserve the order of the bookmarks as well? I ran a test last night with a new browser, and it pulled everything down, but it was all scrambled up.

If Your work profile is a sub folder of your personal profile in Linkwarden then the setting doesn't apply. It only applies to local profiles and folders.

If you want a bookmark to live in your personal toolbar AND in your work folder you always have to create two bookmarks. The question for the nested sync setting is: "Do you want your work folder to be synced by the profile you set up for your personal toolbar (since it is technically a subfolder) or do you want it to only be synced by the special profile you created for the work folder". To reiterate: If you do not have more than one profile per browser you can ignore the nested sync setting.

With Linkwarden floccus currently cannot preserve the order, all other backends can do that.

Actually, do you suggest a service that's compatible with Floccus and will retain the bookmark order?

Anything other than Linkwarden will retain the order. So, that's git, webdav, Google Drive and Nextcloud bookmarks
