How do I close Lazy with <esc>

You can place it in your main or top-level nvim file. Or, if you have a LazyVim-style file organization, you can place it in the /config/keymaps.lua file. Example: https://github.com/cerebrl/nvim/blob/main/lua/config/keymaps.lua.
