How to use User events to load a package

I bring this from reddit because it might actually be of general interest.

Could you please show an example where a plugin is loaded with a custom event? This is my unsuccessful attempt

  {
    "AstroNvim/astrotheme",
    event = "User LoadColorSchemes"
  },

Manually triggering the event like this shows the group doesn't exist

doautocmd LoadColorSchemes

But doing this

  local colorcheme_group = vim.api.nvim_create_augroup("LoadColorSchemes", { clear = true })
  {
    "AstroNvim/astrotheme",
    event = "User LoadColorSchemes"
  },

doautocmd LoadColorSchemes

Then I can trigger the event, but the package is not actually required. This can be easily tested like this:

lua require("telescope.builtin").colorscheme()

The theme is not listed, as it was not actually required by lazy.nvim

Is this a bug, or I'm doing something wrong?

You need to trigger the user autocmd event, I believe it is this:

Vim script:

doautocmd User MyCustomEvent

Lua:

vim.api.nvim_exec_autocmds("User", { pattern = "MyCustomEvent" })
