From @GilesGibson today:

For the free option, we slim down the service directory listing to only include:

  • name
  • simple details (address etc)
  • contact details
  • maybe a (plain text) field for a description of up to 40 words

The chargeable option would allow pictures, unlimited text, maybe tags and so on. Could allow them all the features of a sub-site as you have described but I am not sure that the average trader would be interested that much. I just want to be able to have the system run the direct debit every month based on the directory listing being there. We would need to be able to set the charge for the listing – typically £2-3 a month. As long as they have their listing, the charge is made.

Allied to that would be to have a regular advert on a particular place on the site i.e. front page. Every month would elicit a charge – say £200 per month for their advert to be there.

It is all as per our conversations back when we were doing version 1 of the site.

When the users logs in to get a directory listing they could opt for the larger chargeable version and fill in their bank details etc for the charges. Not sure how we would deal with community groups that are FOC when they create their group. maybe we just need to ask them to email us and we set up a free one for them (unlimited size) to edit as normal.

The aim is to start to get recurring revenue to help finance the site and to pay running costs/admin costs.
