OpenQA nightlies failing due to missing `GIT_REF`

Description

Nightly tests are failing due to a missing GIT_REF variable. It should point to main. Update 3 days ago this seems to have passed. So after all this could be a bug with GitHub itself.

NOTE: The respective github action passes, but it always passes regardless of the OpenQA result. This is because we're displaying the OpenQA jobs as commit status instead. But if you look at the logs, you'll see OpenQA complaining.

This got reverted in #1491. We need a new strategy.
