Thanks for opening the repo! And congrats on the app, I'm eager to see it live in the app store and pay for your effort in developing it.

As for my initial comment on the Hog Bay forums, I think that aspects like the ellipsis button are intuitive for long-standing TaskPaper users, this might not be true for others just starting with TP format, without any prior TaskPaper experience, which may very well happen — you have an app that's perfectly capable of standing on its own.

So, to avoid user confusion, is there a better way to represent the three-way toggle?

I can think of a few suggestions:

1. Button changes depending on which item type is next to be toggled
2. Button offers popover to select item type
3. Keep as is, but offer some kind of onboarding walkthrough.

What do you think?

It's definitely the tool that requires the most explanation.

1. I'd rather not change/cycle the icon as I'm not a fan of hiding choices. The toolbar would look different and require more cognitive load to process what that button does. I looked through the SF Symbols app and the ellipsis stood out to me as representing "three-in-one" another choice would be an icon that represented "cycle" in some way. I think the actual symbol is not important, but how easy the user can associate it with the action that happens when they press it.
2. This is good idea, so then it would be a case of weighing up the extra taps needed to pick the line type from a list vs the frequency of use. I think it's useful but need to live with it for a while. My idea is to order tools from left to right in terms of how frequently they are used. You should not have to swipe the toolbar across very often.
3. As a first step towards a solution I have added long press tool tips to show a hint as to what they are. But I plan to have a default Welcome doc Welcome taskpaper #14 to help orientate new users.
