We’re starting to stabilize our design system, which is a good moment to rethink our CSS foundation.

Before we can properly implement dark mode, we’ll need to refactor the CSS architecture. The current Tailwind setup was initially chosen to speed up development and allow flexibility during rapid design and feature iterations. That worked well early on, but as we now introduce more advanced CSS needs (like environment-based theming and dynamic CSS variables) our current stack makes these workflows cumbersome, even though they are technically possible with Tailwind.

Upcoming PRs (like gnoweb.toml support and visual variations based on environment -> local, testnet, mainnet) will require a more maintainable and expressive system than what we currently have.

Adding dark mode now, on top of the current setup, would only increase complexity and technical debt. Instead, I’ll begin laying the foundations for a new CSS architecture this week -> dark mode will be integrated from the start as a first-class feature.

Let’s start it. I’ll share updates as things progress.
