Allowing cursor to move between columns

Dear developer,
I just discovered lf, and managed to have more columns via lfrc.
But the cursor stays always in the next to last column.
Is there a way to allow cursor moving across columns rather than moving
columns across cursor ?

Sorry, this kind of feature doesn't exist. By design, the cursor is always in the last column (or second last if preview is enabled).

Imagine if you have 5 columns, and move the cursor to column 2 (second on the left). Then when you select a file, which column should show the preview? Either the preview is shown in column 3 (columns 4 and 5 are wasted), or shown in column 5 (columns 3 and 4 form a big gap between the file and the preview). Neither approach sounds particularly appealing to me.

Imagine if you have 5 columns, and move the cursor to column 2 (second on the left). Then when you select a file, which column should show the preview?

The preview should show the selected file content. Column 3 and 4 being empty in that case. It takes full senses, when using a fixed depth directory tree. I think browsing is much intuitive by moving cursor between columns. Hi Dusan Lesan, I rethinked about the "dynamic columns" feature shown in the video : - Will this feature be merged to lf ? Would be happy to try it ;-) - It could be interesting to associate it with a option allowing to specify the root directory of the subtree (not necessary start at /), and another option specifying if it is allowed to go upper than this root of subtree or not. @PHHENS This does not require any lf app changes as it can be fully configured within your config file. You only need to include the supplied code in your lfrc and it should work.

Here is the code I've modified to work with custom root. The variable lf_user_root_dir is used for that and in this example you can set it with set-root command (mapped to key R). Additionally, it tries to detect if you left the custom root scope and it will set new root automatically. This is just a proof of concept code, and you can further modify it to fix bugs or change behavior.

The implementation above does not block exiting outside of the scope of the root dir - it will change the user root instead.
To block exiting the user root and its sub-directories, I do not know any nice way to do it and if pre-cd can be used. The only thing I can think of is where I call set-root from the command on-cd is to cd back to the root.

Hi Dusan, Thought that the notify-send was part of lf tui. I now understand, that it is the one from Gnome, which was not installed... Thought that the notify-send was part of lf tui

I just use notify-send to debug GUI/TUI apps. It is not needed if you did not use it before but I was wrong to assume everybody has it installed already as dependency for browsers and similar apps

How to tell lf to change current directory ?

To change the directory from a custom command you should use remote like this: lf -remote "send $id cd /home/ph"
