Don't know how to make automation work

Can't figure out how to assign automation to tracks, I set them to the same channel and instrument and align in the pattern roll but nothing I do to the automation affects the notes in any way with the exception of "master tempo" and the default "volume" automation.
Maybe I need to do something in the orchestra pit? Couldn't find any tutorials that helped so if anyone could land me a hand.

It should be enough to assign an instrument to your automation track (and change channel, optionally); at least, it works for me. What automations have you added, and which plugins are you using?

I tried the volume and expression both "fine" and "coarse" separately on the default instrument and the odin2 VST and none of them work, the automation envelopes do seem to work with odin2 on Reaper though.
I then installed some kontakt 8 VSTs and helio's automation does work on them, so I guess it's a plugin specific issue.
I'll try a few other plugins and see what I can work with

The default instrument is very basic (meant to be an introductory or fallback instrument) and doesn't support most automations. I can confirm issues with Odin and some others. Strangely, the sustain pedal automation works for Odin, but things like pan or expression do not.
