Hubot Adapter requirement for a customized chat

I have a question on what are the requirements to get Hubot adapter running on a customized chat.
IP address? User name? message?

I am having a lot of trouble trying to get the hub adapter running on a customized chat. I would be happy if someone can lend me a hand.
