Overview:
Recent progress in large language models (LLMs) has accelerated the development of autonomous agents. However, fully autonomous LLM-based agents still struggle with issues like hallucinations, unreliable reasoning, and safety risks in open-ended environments. To mitigate these limitations, LLM-based Human-Agent Systems (LLM-HAS) introduce human input and oversight as integral components of agent architectures. This paper presents the first comprehensive survey of LLM-HAS, introducing core concepts and providing a structured analysis across key dimensions: environment configuration, human profiling, interaction modalities, orchestration strategies, and communication topologies. The survey also reviews current applications and outlines open research challenges, aiming to establish a foundation for future innovations in this emerging area.
