Porting to iOS - where should I start? #1075?

Hello @iSoron and fellow contributors, I'd be keen to resolve #487 (iOS support).

I thought it'd be best to voice my intention here for better coordination.

I'm aware that there's likely to be quite a bit of work to be done, maybe more than I can chew! But I'd like to help as much as possible.

My current understanding is that a refactoring work (#1075) is a prerequisite for that. Is that still the case? Should this be the first fish to fry?
