Allow user to create groups of habits

I really like your app, but I'm missing this special feature: (sub-) tasks for habits. This feature would really help to manage habits like:

• Stretching exercises
  • Morning
  • Lunch break
  • Evening
• Learn Japanese
  • Review vocab
  • Complete grammar lesson

I'd really like to break down habits in tasks and be able to check them separately.

That's what I currently do in such cases. The main shortcoming I see is that I cannot compute the stats about the main task directly (in your example, I couldn't get the stats about the "stretching" metatask without computing them myself). Are there others which make you want such a feature?

I think it would be easier for the uhabits developers to test, review, and merge your changes if you create a pull request. This will also ensure that you will get credited in the git history as the author of these changes.

FWIW adding a search/filter option doesn't fully solve the "grouping" problem being discussed here, but to me (as a user) adding a search box seems a useful feature for people with a lot of habits, and a worthwhile addition to the app.

Yes, my goal is not grouping, but filtering based on the word search in the habit name to quickly find the habit I'm looking for without wasting time. I know coding this will be much easier. I didn't make a pull request because this code hasn't been tested; when placing SearchView as a menu item, Sort Filter doesn't work now. It's okay for me, but as it is, it's not applicable to the program. I will attempt to code it in a way that a popup view will open when clicking on the search option in the menu, similar to the Add Habit popup screen. So why did I share the code without checking it at all? Because there are those in urgent need and somewhat familiar with Android Studio, maybe they can temporarily apply and use it. Or the Loop Habit Tracker developers might consider implementing this idea upon seeing it. I will strive to create a better and problem-free solution, and only then can I make a pull request. I cannot promise right now. If the sort filter is not important, and someone just wants the search filter to work like me, i.e., if there are many habits added, they can temporarily try my solution, provided they have backed up and exported their data. Grouping is challenging for me, and I will focus on improving only the search within the habit name and filtering the habit list. If it turns out smooth and beautiful, maybe developers will consider adding it as a feature to the program. I wrote about grouping here because, as far as I understand, grouping is difficult and has been waiting for a long time. Thanks.

Hi @DevPS-513 , I am a normal user. Therefore, my above solution was ugly as code. Currently I have no plan.
I am sorry, maybe a little bit out of topic, but;
Instead of installing multiple "Loop Habit Tracker" software, or too much habit entries, maybe we can use it as habit tracking only.
And doing other things with these software, as I am trying to do nowadays.
I suggest to give them a try for each at least 3-5 days, because at first glance a man cannot understand the big difference from other similar things.
I will use all of them, "Loop Habit Tracker" for new habits,
"Simple Time Tracker" to understand my daily activities and setting goals,
"Super Productivity" to force myself counting my working time effectively and to focus projects.

The other that I see, and that I would really appreciate would be to have logical relation between habits.

For example, in a main task "sport", I would have swimming, bodybuilding, soccer, and more. I physically cannot train 2 sports on a same day without falling apart.
So when one sub-task of the main task "sport" is checked, the others would be in a "passive check" state, and the habit score would not decrease.

Also, thanks for the hard work on this app. I have been using it for more than a year. It is awesome.

Ok I see, in your example of course you could just track the activity sport, but I think what would be interesting is to still have minimum requirements for the subtask, e.g.:

• sport is some kind of metatask and is done at least 3 time per week, including
  • swimming at least once a week
  • bodybuilding at least once a week
  • soccer with no minimum

This metatask system is quite different from what the original post meant though.

In my opinion this feature seems to be really hard to implement (how to design an unobtrusive UI; calculating the overall score from all the sub-habits; build additional statistics UI for the meta-habit) while providing little value over all.

I see your point why this might come in handy but in my opinion the grouping can easily be achieved by assigning the same colour and sorting by colour.

what I could see working would be a grouping function. so you would be able to assign a habit to a group. the only thing that would do is a visual grouping on the main screen. that actually might be relatively easy to implement and can later be extended to allow for group statistics and such. if that would be enough to solve your problem we should probably close this issue and open a new one with the above mentioned request.

This feature request is somewhat tricky because most users who request it are actually proposing a particular solution ("to create group habits") to a problem that they have never fully explained. There seems to be at least three perceived problems out there:

• I want to create groups of habits so that I can better organize the list. For example, if I am not particularly interested in some group of habits right now, I could collapse that folder and focus on something else. Perhaps I could also move the folder, archive it or edit it more easily. Some users also suggest creating multiple lists of habits instead of folders, but the underlying problem seems to be the same -- they don't think the current interface is organized enough.

• I want to create groups of habits so that I can see their combined performance. For example, if I have three habits related to Japanese learning, I might want to know how are these habits progressing, not individually, but as a group. This is essentially Display combined statistics for groups of habits #51.

• I want to group multiple habits so that the app can automatically calculate the score of this combined group according to some complicated rule. For example, I would like to receive a checkmark whenever I perform any two of three possible sports activities within a week. I still want to track each activity individually, but I don't want to spend time calculating the combined score manually. This was first proposed in Habit inheritance / aggregation #191.

I am still not convinced that the first problem is that serious. We already have colors, in addition to different sorting and filtering methods. The layout proposed by @hiqua works very well for long lists. If anyone wants to create some compelling user interface concepts, I could change my mind.

The second problem is much more serious to me, and I would even categorize it as one of the main current limitations of the app, but we already have an issue for that (#51).

The third one looks somewhat interesting, but I would assume only a tiny fraction of users would be interested in it and it would significantly complicate the code. Coming up with an interface for even describing these rules also looks pretty hard. If the rules are very simple (say, the percentage of completed habits in the group), I would be fine with it. This could be implemented in #31 -- after creating a tag, the tag could appear as a "read-only habit" in the main screen, and its score would just be an average.

With just grouping you don't have a statistic!

Another issue is the limited space for the text, you have two lines and on small screens the text is often cut off if you are using long names as suggested by @hiqua . This makes it confusing.

@iSoron I can imagine a somehow simple way to design and implement this.

1. A task can reference another task as it's main task. This would be a single input.
2. A task can have a rule : check if at least X sub-tasks are checked. The number N would be another input.
3. A task have a rule about how to behave with the main task. This would be limited to "weak check if main task is checked" (score is frozen for that day) and "no interaction with main task". This would be the 3rd input.

Basically, if this is codded in a generic way that you can create sub-sub-tasks and more. You would be able to create complex rules with basically minimal UI.

The difference between this and #31 is that you can check a main task even if a sub task is not checked : I did boxing today, so I check Sport, so my score goes higher, but since Sport is checked, the sub-tasks Soccer, Running and Swimming are frozen, their score does not get lower. I never do Boxing, that's why I do not have an habit, but I wanted to try it.

The main problem that I have today the following one : what motivates me is seeing the calendar with checks and grey checks, with a score that goes higher every week, and not being able to group habits makes scoring pointless in some situations.

1. If I create two tasks : Sport: Running and Sport: Swimming. I have to decide how much swimming and how much running I want to do per week, and I will have to stick to it for a long time (in my case, years) to see both scores increase. If I don't, I only go Running for a month because I am far from my swimming pool, I will see my Swimming score decrease, with red crosses on the last week.
2. I create only a task Sport, I loose track of what sport I am doing (that's what I am doing). But then I loose motivation to do Swimming (I don't have a habit for score).

It makes sense for basically anything, what should I do if I have 2 tasks "learn Japanese: review vocab" and "learn Japanese: complete grammar lesson" like said before. If I go on a trip to Japan, those 2 tasks are going to go down because I didn't "complete grammar lesson" ? Or should I just check them both ? Probably not, a trip to Japan is not a "grammar lesson". But it is still part of "learn Japanese". So a group habit "Learn Japanese" should be checked, and go higher, while sub-tasks are grey checked and score stay frozen.

@MohamedKiouaz I very much like this idea. The only really complicated part (for the first working version) would be the implementation of your second point. creating sophisticated rules with subtasks.

I imagine that to be quite complicated because every sub task can have different goals.

1: complete 4 times in a week
2: complete 2 times in 2 weeks

How could the grouping rule look like?

1: check when any subtask is checked (probably the only feasible solution)
2: check when subtasks are checked X times in X days (maybe)

@iSoron What do you think of this solution. with this approach we could implement the base for all three requirements at once. In the beginning it would provide mostly a solution for the third feature but I can imagine it to be relatively easy to implement a grouping ui for feature 1. the statistics as requested in feature 2 would be basically for free because it will be derived from the checked state of the main task which is known.

@chennemann I think this might work. Are you interested in implementing it? I would suggest starting from the core classes (org.isoron.uhabits.core.models) and dealing with the UI later. Feel free to submit a work-in-progress pull request, so we can discuss the implementation.

I'm with @MohamedKiouaz, that would be a flexible and simple solution, but a couple of potential issues came to my mind:

1. This would allow a large number of nested tasks and the score computation will be cumbersome since the relation between parent and child is two-way.
2. In fact this is a consideration: we would need to compute the score of every task of the group (at least. Here group means a parent and all its children) even if we need only a child's score.

My solution to the first point is to allow only one level of dependency (a task cannot be both a parent and a child) because I think that one of the main strenghts of this app is the immediacy and for the majority of the use cases one will be enough. This approach will be also easier to implement because requires only to track if a task has a parent (and which obviously, see below).
Let me explain the second point: if a child may be frozen (for that day) by the parent's check, we need to compute that firstly and to do so we need all of it's children. Since this forces us to compute the whole group's scores we could do something like this:

1. Detect the group in which the task is located (regardless of its role) *
2. Check the parent if at least N of it's children are checked
3. Freeze the children that require to do so

* Note that this only requires that child tasks reference the parent, without the parent beeing aware of it's children. A static assigment will cause a lot of potential troubles when deleting, moving or adding tasks.

With this approach the changes are relatively small:

• Add an optional reference to a parent task, and the choice freeze/not freeze when parent is checked
• Detect the groups before performing some actions (UI included)
• Add a threshold value to the parent to be auto-checked (I propose to default this to 1)
• Calculate the checkmarks of the whole group instead of the single task

To conclude: for the UI we could just show the children task nested below the parent, a bit shifted to the right.

What do you think? Does this proposal summarize the main problems in an intuitive and easy solution?

3. Freeze the children that require to do so

I don't like the idea of the children to be frozen by the parent. It would be like "I did a workout exercise, therefore I jogged today."

Even if freezing means "no need to do the child goal", what it means for best streaks and scores of the child goal? Would I get a running streak for a child goal that I have done zero time?

Or do you mean something else? But since I already comes up 2 different interpretation of freezing, this freezing idea has just confuses me and therefore it already falls under "we shouldn't do this, it is too complicated."

But I like the rest of you idea.

I'm ok with the habits all being calculated separately, I just would like to basically put habits in folders so I'm not scrolling through a long list. I could have a folder for health (floss teeth), one for symptoms (headache), one for improvement (learn a language, etc), etc.

+1 for this. I have... 80+ habits abd scrolling through all of them is a hassle. I could turn on the option to hide the completed habits but it is not always that useful, since sometimes I want to complete habits ahead of time or something else and etc.

For me only being able to have multiple views that I can easily filter the habits would be good enought. A solution that I thought about it would be:

1. add the option to name the colors
2. add an option to be able to change what colors are displayed easily
   • this could be done simply by swiping left and right or a drop down menu to select the color/category or even both

this would be just perfect for me but that is all I'm interested in.

about the calculation of grouped habits/etc I think that going for the easy route of simply calculating an average of the habits grouped would be enough. I really think that calculating the score any other way would be rather complicated and maybe it wouldn't make that much of a difference for most people since the single habits already are being calculated.

I have habits for nearly everything because if I'm not reminded to do these stuff I just end up forgetting to do stuff. I think I do have some kind of undiagnosed attention disorder but alas.

For ex, I have an habit that is "do nothing" and also "listen to podcasts", "play games" and other similar stuff because if I don't keep thinking about I'll just forget about it and hiperfocus on doing "productive" stuff. For instance, once while on a end of semester I spent more than a month without doing anything to destress spending all my waking hours studying/doing exams/etc and you can imagine the major burnout it caused.

I have a lot of habits related to health. Higiene, diet (eating less of some stuff, more of other stuff), sleep habits, medicines and exercises (of which I have some semi reduntant ones so I do some varied exercises).

There are a lot of media related habits so I vary the kind of content I consume and not only one kind (instead of listening to podcasts for 6h+/day).

There are some organizational tasks too and other routines.

I think that in short, I have lots of habits because i put it on the app:

• everything that is related to self improvement (reading, studying, learning languages, etc)
• everything that is related to self care (higiene, decluttering, meditation, diary writing)
• everything related to organizing that I'd like to do more than 2/3 times a week (I have a habit about updating the habit tracking app, yeah)
• whatever else I feel like I should do more often/make a routine of and that I'd like to keep track of when I did it so it doesn't go in the task app (playing music, reading news, playing chess, origami, etc)
• whatever I feel like that doesn't fit as a simple task

so... yeah, my use of the app is pretty... extensive and I'm well aware of that. I don't really expect many people to have as much habits as I do but I really like having then because it helps greatly both to remind me to do the stuff and as motivations (numbers go brr)

How many do you complete in a very good day, 80 of them?

I went ahead and counted and on a very good day I'd do up to 70 of them but considering I have a few habits that have bigger intervals (once every week/10 days for ex) I'd say on a good day i'd tackle 50-60.

Are sorts not enough?

I don't think sorts are enough because there are too many items that reordering them doesn't really make a difference. I do use colors as a kind of category (so every color is roughly a context/type of habit) and that does help a little bit since but for every color that is not the first and the last one a lot of scrolling is required.

my current setup is:

• color are pseudo categories, related habits, by context, time of the day or whatever are grouped under the same color.
• if I need to group some habits inside a color or for whatever reason I need some habit to come first on the color I use naming to keep them together using alphabetical sorting for instance, orange is the exercice color, so I have all my exercise related habits under it and the first habit is called "1 exercise" so it is always on the top of the color so I can see it when I check some of the different kinds of exercises.

I'd love to but I have very few bandwidth for work + I don't really program at all and I have no idea how I'd even start trying to implement it so I think I could at least contribute by giving my 2 cents. hahaha

I have ADHD; I have found Loop Habit Tracker very beneficial. However a list of (incomplete) habits becomes difficult for me to manage when more than about a dozen items are in the list at once. Therefore, my problem is best described (by @iSoron) as:

• I want to create groups of habits so that I can better organize the list.

The solution proposed by @hiqua doesn't help for my case, because the issue is caused by the number of items in the list, not by the naming or ordering of the items. @ardydo's use case and requirements seem to match mine quite well (the number of habits I am currently tracking is much lower, but I would like to be able to track more than I do).

A working solution for me would meet two requirements:
1. Ability to assign tasks to groups.
2. Ability to hide tasks belonging to certain groups.

For the first requirement, this could be implemented by either:
1.1. Using colors as groups, e.g., by allowing the user to name them (@ardydo's suggestion).
1.2. Adding a new concept of groups.

Option 1.2 is probably the most flexible and general solution, but option 1.1 might be easier to implement and would be useful for users who already use colors as pseudo-categories. However, as @malnvenshorn notes, option 1.1 may become problematic when working with a large number of groups (although if the groups are named, being able to visually distinguish them by color alone becomes less important).

The second requirement could be implemented by either:
2.1. Adding a mode to the list UI which shows groups as collapsible sublists (@malnvenshorn's suggestion with the addition of collapsibility). This is how the UI for layers and groups in Adobe Photoshop works.
2.2. Adding items to the filter menu which toggle the visibility of individual groups (@ardydo's suggestion).
2.3 Adding a new list which shows only groups; the user can then choose a group to view only habits in that group.

Option 2.1 is currently my preferred option, but I would be open to the other options if other feature requesters prefer one of these of if they prove easier to implement. I imagine the UI for this would look like the mockup below.

I have some experience with programming (as a hobby), so I'm happy to try to put together some code for this, with a few pointers. I'm not in need of the aggregate statistics feature, but I can try to write my code in a way that would make it easier for another contributor to add this feature.

I have some tasks that need to be done only once a week or a few times a month and so on and the habit list has start to blow up. I have about 30 so far but would like to add more if there was an option to have habits grouped as in the screenshots above.

Right now, using colors works well enough. But I do have to scroll and find that color.

If we could just name colors with a label and filter out a color, we'd already be close to this.

For example, I'd like to be able to open "Daily" habits folder where everything should be marked, and then I'd like to have other folders such as "Sport", "Studying" where I have habits that are not daily, but I want to get an overview of what exercises I am doing and how often.

I want a version of this feature so that I can track elastic habits. I coincidentally just found out that the author of elastic habits and mini habits apparently loves Loop, which I also rly like b/c it let's me export my data.

HOWEVER, this guy later wrote Elastic Habits, which I really like the idea of, as a better alternative to mini habits, and basically the idea is:
A habit is satisfied by accomplishing one of 3 types of related tasks at one of 3 levels (maybe 2-4 if you want): trivial (1 minute completion), medium (actual effort), and herculean (I forget the labels but basically this is like working on something for 2 hours). What activity option you chose in order to satisfy the habit doesn't matter, but the level of accomplishment/effort does, so having a way to track that would be nice. Basically this requires both grouping habits AND having degrees of habits displayed differently. Like having 3 degrees/slightly different colors in your stats, or like all related stats for that elastic habit group displayed together.

These are some of my own personal ideas/notes of examples of flexibility/elasticity horizontally (via activity options) and vertically (via achievement level):

Reading:
1 minute audiobook or 45 seconds kindle or 15 seconds pdf/physical

15 minutes audiobook or 9 minutes kindle or 4 minutes pdf/physical or finish something that takes longer than the mini versions up to the plus option

my favorite one would be a very simple UI to group several tasks together (only visually) so that I can clean up the space when tracking a specific part and avoid having huge lists

I am with several users here. I would be happy to see a simple UI with Folders and subfolders. I can see the usefulness of calculations at the folder/subfolder level. But the UI change would be my main request.

Here's my take on things. Going for something simple and primarily a visual improvement. Everything can be kept on the same level with no changes in indentation needed

Would be neat for this to be implemented as section dividers. My personal use case doesn't require the ability to collapse/expand sections/groups, but based off the replies here, I think that could be something that tapping the section name can do

I'm on the same page with you with my 50+ tracked items. Currently I'm using separators with names like "----- GROUP -----" to make the line distinct enough. Something like your suggestion would be quite practical in my case too.

I am interested in implementing this feature with a basic aggregated statistic - score and streak, but not checkmarks. I have been slowly working towards it when I get some free time. However, I don't have much experience with Android/Kotlin development. Maybe we can discuss a good implementation?

While unable to contribute with code, I would like to advocate for this feature as well. After reading "Atomic Habits", I realised I actually benefitted from having multiple "small" habits to track.

I also agree that option 2.1 is the better implementation of this feature. But I would only include the discussion this possibility: instead of collapsible groups, why not consider a "page system"? This would mean that by clicking in a group, only the habits within that group, along with a "back" button, would be displayed.

The second scheme allows, for example, a user creating nested groups of groups. I believe this makes the UI less cluttered than using collapsible groups and allows users to better focus on what they want to see.

But it's only my suggestion, I believe the priority would be to at least have habit grouping functional within the app.

@manoelpqueiroz I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. We could make clicking the caret fold/unfold the group whereas clicking the actual group name would open a page containing just habits from that group. For now, I think getting 2.1 working is a good first step and then this can be extended to include the page feature.

Hi, currently i am developing on Java spring boot an another thing. My solution was temporary and problematic. My firend programmed it. After that, my android  oreo removed uhabits for long time, now i have it again, but I postponed using it. It is useful, thx to developers. I think i cannot help about that. I will try to reduce my habit entries and use it again. I am not android developer. At that time I tried to understand the code with my friend and he did it. But it breaks another things, not a real solution. uhabits is skilled sowftware.. Thanks. Suggestion: Summarized tracking for grouped habits

For habit groups that are measurable, e.g. tracked using hours, we could display the sum of the values from all sub-habits in the group.

Example

Imagine a habit group for working on a project, with the following sub-habits:

• Learning: Studying concepts related to the project
• Writing: Formalizing ideas/documentation
• Programming: Implementing the idea for the project

If each sub-habit is measured in hours, the habit group tab would show the sum of hours spent on all sub-habits.
If your daily goal is 4 hours, the group habit would be considered achieved as long as the combined hours exceed the target of 4 hours.

Some days you spend more day on one sub-habit then on the others, so a group view ensures progress is tracked holistically.

if i'm allowed to expand on this idea. let's say you have n daily habits, and you "success" is when you achieve i < n of them.
i.e.: let's say you have a "morning" big habit which is done whenever 3 of 5 habits are done. let's say: shower, quick jog, no phone till after 1 hr, 30min reading a book. all of those are a yes/no, and the "Big" habit is also a yes/no. would such an implementation be consdered and how might it look?
