UART wifi dongle

I'm looking for if there is a setting in the latest or in the previous releases, to use Esp-link as a wifi dongle, connected via gpio to an sbc, (like an rPi or an Odroid or similar, that not have others options to connect to a net). Of course the esp must be connected to the home main network. I am perfectly aware of the technical limitations due for example to the baud rate, just to name one, I am interested in knowing whether it is feasible or not, and how.
