"Waiting for first data" in panel

This looks to be a great contribution. I want to use it for sailboat simulation control of rudder and sail.
My simulation advertises to /joy and even publishes a dummy message to it, but the panel only says "Waiting for first data"

Apologies for newbie understanding level here.

Here is what I see:

Cursor solved it with periodic republication of /joy topic. I don't understand why the panel needs to get a message to publish to the topic since it is meant to be the source of the topic. But it runs now. But it does not show any joystick, just numbered buttons. After switching to Display mode custom the joystick shows up. But now the fake /joy messages I publish to satisfy the 'waiting for first data' seem to block the publishing from foxglove panel. Only publishing a few /joy at start does not resolve the 'waiting' problem.

I will give up for now and go to a CLI keyboard controller. I should probably read the README more carefully.

Maybe I should be using a fork? If so, which one? github is not very helpful about this.
