  • I have a UI/accessibility question -- does anybody remember why the menus at the top are organized the way they are in JupyterLab versus in Jupyter Classic? E.g., Cell-->stuff in Jupyter Classic, versus Run --> mostly same stuff in JupyterLab. But then the Kernel menu is the same. In particular, will Jupyter classic change its menu layout to match JupyterLab at some point? Maybe it already did and I'm using an old version. Thanks.

  • [@jasongrout] we did a few menu usability studies for JupyterLab and debated the menu structure a lot over months to come up with the existing menu layout that oriented towards (a) feeling familiar to application menus (e.g., File Edit View Help being top-level categories) and (b) toward user actions (e.g., "Run" deals with actions around running cells)
  • [@jtpio]: note there is also an issue in Notebook 7 to match the menus of the classic notebook #6398. But this was before releasing Notebook 7 final, and may not be relevant anymore.

  • JupyterLab 4.1 call for testing [do-not-merge] JupyterLab 4.1 beta - call for testing on socials #233
  • Three vulnerabilities fixed, please update:
    • jupyter-lsp 2.2.2 was released including a fix for critical security vulnerability GHSA-4qhp-652w-c22x; all users of JupyterLab v4.0 and Notebook v7.0 are recommended to upgrade.
      Thank you to researchers at pillar.security for discovering and disclosing the issue. Thanks to @bollwyvl for help with fixing the issue!
    • JupyterLab 3.6.7, 4.0.11, 4.1.0b2, JupyterLab Desktop 4.0.11-1, and Notebook 7.0.7 were released including fixes for two security vulnerabilities:
      • GHSA-44cc-43rp-5947 (all versions mentioned), and
      • GHSA-4m77-cmpx-vjc4 (JupyterLab 3.x and earlier not affected).
        The reports for these from a bug bounty programme sponsored by European Commission. Thanks to @fcollonval for reviews and @jtpio for help with Notebook release!

  • JupyterLab is part of NumFOCUS application for GSoC 2024
    The final format to list the projects is a single document - I set it up as wiki page on team-compass. Unsure this is the best place in the long term (but we were under pressure due to the GSoC deadline).
  • Cell execution through REST endpoint PR
    It highlights the difficulty to hook custom code in the cell execution logic. This was hit also in a PoC for code SQL. The workaround is quite hacky.
    I'm proposing to add a new token to register pre-processor to cell execution. It will open the box to deal with unrecognized cell type and change of behavior like the REST endpoint proposal. The cell will not process by the default algorithm if any pre-processors returns true.
    [Mike] we could image having the actions backed by commands that could be replaced.
    [Frederic] The trouble with the on running cells is that there are lots of actions composing it with other actions. So the basic common one Private.runCell won't be a good candidate to become a command as its inputs are not JSON serializable.
    [Mike] what about bringing a plugin that would bring a CellExecutor or something like that.
    [Frederic] I'll try to come with a proposal in that direction.
