Once the first level of the pyramid is written, writing the other levels and creating the metadata is modality-independent.

We should refactor these steps to avoid duplication across modalities. I kind of started doing this in the zarr3 branch (#9)

This does not apply to the DF/JP2K data, since we're directly using the JP2K levels there.
