Is creating symlinks the right model?

I feel like mackup was created with an assumption which is often false: that apps tolerate when you change their config files to symbolic links.

This clearly doesn't work for lots of apps, e.g. iTerm2, Velja, Al Dente, etc. Maybe even most?
The apps don't recognize the symbolic links and just re-create new files.

I feel like this app needs to be rebooted with a different model in mind:

• copy/sync/merge
• check that the app isn't actually running before doing backups (maybe offer to quit the app and restart it when the backup/restore is done).

Or am I missing something?

yeah it can be done with rsync if you want to sync files, not symlinks
