hiking and cycling, openmtbmap_it_srtm/7*.img not available anywhere?

I tried to generate the map $HIKING/escursionismo, unfortunately the SRTM data that I think could be originally tracked back to ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openmtbmap/contourlines/openmtbmap_it_srtm.zip never seems to be available anymore, anywhere...

Then I tried to investigate on a possible replacement, but I think that the "rabbit hole" of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission datasets is quite big to explore on my own.
The best candidate I think I found, being pre-compiled, available for direct download and splitted into countries, is there: http://develop.freizeitkarte-osm.de/

Obviously a dumb replacement of the file allows the creation of a valid map, but the elevation contour lines (isohypsis) are missing (I suppose that, if the file I found is really useful, it could be necessary to tell mkgmap something about the layers it must merge).

So, is the original file available somewhere? If not, could it be somehow replaced?
