Unable to connect to wikimedia labsdb

The following example code does not seem to work for the labs db connection parameters.

from mw import database
db = database.DB.from_params(
host="enwiki.labsdb",
read_default_file="~/.my.cnf",
user="myusername",
db="enwiki_p"
)

It fails in the pymysql.connect method with the following error:

pymysql.err.OperationalError: (1045, "Access denied for user 'myusername'@'<ip_address>' (using password: YES)")

FWIW, the parameter values are correct as the same works from the command line.
