Fallback to default configuration if controllers are missing

This isn't a bug, but rather a feature request / enhancement. Would it be possible to fall back to the default RetroPie joystick selection if a configured joystick is missing? For instance, I'd like to assign some USB gamepads to P1/P2, but only assign them as P1/P2 if plugged in while leaving my arcade sticks connected. I tried this with SNES, but I have to clear the config each time if I don't want to plug my gamepads in.

@cgmckeever Hmmm. I noticed it says that in the setup menu for it as well, however mine isn't working that way. If I set P1 and P2 to my gamepads, my USB arcade controllers don't fall back when the gamepads are unplugged. If I leave everything unset in the joystick collection config, my p1/p2 arcade sticks work as expected, but my pads go to p3/4.

are you setting it to selection by name? it may be that ports swap when you plug in the other ones. and then it gets all confused

@cgmckeever Selection by name seemed to solve it, thanks! I did run into another issue though. Some part of the joystick selection script was creating the config files with root ownership. I had to ssh into fix the permissions on them (pi:pi), then run the selection script via ssh as the pi user. I was then able to set selection by name and choose my USB gamepads. I'm not too familiar with the retropie plugin architecture, but it seems part of the script was running with elevated privileges when launched from emulationstation which was causing issues. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction though!

So, I'm having a similar problem, in my case I have a device with an embedded joystick, but I'd like to connect one or two Xbox 360 controllers using the wireless receiver. I was able to do the connections and test the controllers. The problem, on the other hand, is more because if I put the xbox 360 joystick as p1 when I disconnect it I cannot use the embedded joystick anymore, which is used to control the emulationstation. For example, I cannot press the hotkey to close the emulator and come back.

Hi, I'm seeing this behavior as well. I am using a PS4 controller for player 1 (bluetooth) & Logitech controller for player 2 (USB). If I don't connect the PS4 controller & try to use the Logitech, I am unable to access menus. If I boot the PS4 controller up, I am able to access them again. I have selection by name turned on.

Edit: I tried only assigning the PS4 controller to priority 1 & leaving the other slots as unassigned. Hoping that maybe the unassigned Logitech would take the priority 1 spot if the PS4 controller was missing. Same behavior. Looks like it is keeping the priority reserved for the assigned controller.
