Fails to build with TeXLive 2022 because of bug in unmaintained "tabu" #235

With TeXlive 2022 the second edition fails to build with this error at line 7902:

This is probably tabu-issues-for-future-maintainer/tabu#27. The package is no longer maintained, any ideas for mitigating this?
