Build instructions not working, process hangs

Like in #13470 I also find that the instructions don't work for me, even in a devcontainer provided by the project (trying the dev-python one now). It gets stuck somewhere and never seems to complete

No further progress after hours of waiting. It looks like zeromq installed successfully. I can also install that separately no problem, as suggested above. Same for bufferutils.

UPDATE: After a google search suggestion I got it to work by using yarn install (and then deleting the yarn.lock). No idea why that works and npm doesn't.

I'm sorry you're running into this.
As a work around you can run npm install --ignore-scripts and then npm run postinstall
As for a long term solution, we're looking into updating zmq package and believe that will address this issue (by not including the zeromq package in package.json)

Just for the record, following hints from the GitHub actions, I had tried that already and it did not work.
