allowing GC at a non-standard location

Due to ongoing OSX issues with GC, it would be great if the package allowed configuring GC at a non-standard location (then we can do Travis testing with GC built from source). It's just a couple of lines to add to configure.ac I think.

Sounds like a good idea. Do you know any documentation I should look at?

MPFR lets one configure GMP lib dependence at a non-standard location, and they use autoconf for this.
