AutoComplete keyboard navigation not possible with VoiceOver

Steps to reproduce

Steps:

1. with iPhone and BlueTooth keyboard and VoiceOver
2. go to https://mui.com/material-ui/api/autocomplete/
3. try and navigate an AutoComplete example with keyboard

down arrow causes an error beep. (I believe it should expand the dropdown)

alternatively

right arrow to focus dropdown icon works OK
return expands the dropdown OK
arrow down causes an error beep. (even though the dropdown is expanded)

works OK if VoiceOver is turned OFF

When using VO on iOS I get the "double tap to open" on the combobox. No instruction on using keyboard. Should it work? Could you give us an example of a combobox that works?
