Chapter 1 Observing Guide Updates

• 1.2 Preliminary Setup

1. Clarify that Ptolemy is a computer.
2. Clarify that you must make directory for target, then for night of observation as a subdirectory for the target.
3. Remove extra parentheses after cd example.
4. Create template for obsreport and explain how to copy it into night's directory.
5. Consistently use "terminal" instead of switching between that and "UNIX command prompt".
6. Clarify that Lamatshu is another computer.
7. The password to access the IP address given is not "ccd", it is "foo".

• 1.4 Calibration

1. Emphasize that you must start sequence at 1 for each image sequence (flat, dark, bias, target).
2. Decide on what word we will use to describe "Light Frame" images consistently throughout guide.
3. Clarify that a separate sequence of flats must be taken for each filter that you plan to observe in.
4. Note that we should standardly use "r'" for exoplanet transits and use "B" and "V" for variable stars.
5. Get new screenshot of Setup Sequence window that has two flat sequences with different filters and one bias sequence to replace the one we have already.

• 1.5 Focusing/1.6 Guiding/1.7 Sequencing

1. Note that you should not rotate the guide box on starry night, as our telescope does not have the feature needed to physically rotate as that indicates it would.

In order to complete 5 under 1.4 I think that the telescope might need to be on in order to select the filter. I tried to get it at some point during the day when I only opened up MaxIm CCD without doing anything else (i.e. turning on the telescope) and I was not able to click the drop-down box to select a filter for flat or bias images. This is normal for biases, but unusual for flats.

Update: I have spoken to Lou and he said that MaxIm must be connected to the camera in order to view filter choices, so @MCilento or @acw61 consider planning to go through to whole observing procedure up until this point and then get the screenshot.

1.2 Preliminary Setup:
Completed 5, 6, 7: It would be helpful for someone to reread that section to be sure everything is correct. It might also be useful to add a screenshot of the terminal in this section.

1.4 Calibration:
Completed 5: Anja got the screenshot from the Ptolemy computer, and I replaced the old screenshot in the observing guide.

General:
I made an observing template for the appendix and inserted it into the observing guide. The formatting however is not how I originally made it, so I pushed the observing template (Obsreport_template.txt.rtf) so everyone knows how it is supposed to look like. The goal for this is to add color to certain text and make the spacing correct.

All changes have been pushed to Github.

Here are my comments on Chapter 1:

• In section 1.2 the text runs into the margin.
• In 1.4.6 For the screenshot if you're observing in two filters in the guide it says to use B and V (that is according to the note that @acw61 penciled into the guide), so the Setup Sequence window should have those filters in the window.
• In 1.5.7 make a note that you can't rotate the window in Starry Night.
  (These are my comments up until section 1.6, where I stopped reading.)

@MCilento and I got a new screenshot of the Setup Sequence issue and I changed ObservingGuide.tex to reflect this change. All changes have been pushed.
