Hi all, I have updated the download link for the VFS Beta and added some important details to the main post -- please read in full and try the updated package! EDIT: Just updated the link with a new release including a hotfix for an issue with the sidebar entry not appearing |

I have VFS Beta 3 (hotfix 1) running nicely :-) The issue at #1337 (comment) is also resolved for me. All are showing correct dates. Query now for me is how to make a file or folder available online only if it has been downloaded before or has been newly added? Same question as raised here #1337 (comment) |

This seems to work well so far! One thing I've noticed that hasn't been mentioned here yet: It looks like moving files inside the virtual filesystem causes their content to be reuploaded. They appear correctly moved inside the Nextcloud web UI before the uploading has finished though. |

Hi all, But when the share starts to become more active, generating push notifications, the FileProviderExt process starts to eat up 96-98% of one core (Apple M1) and Finder becomes unresponsive. You have to wait much longer before Finder opens an unmaterialized folder. Sometimes half a minute, sometimes a minute, sometimes even more. The same holds for previews and file materialization. |

I would have one quick question about the upcoming Virtual Files support for macOS, as I have seen this problem with other cloud solutions that use the Apple API: Will file permissions also be uploaded (i.e. will I be able to store an executable and use it on other Macs)? I know this works with iCloud and Dropbox for instance. |

Firstly thanks for all the work thats been put into getting VFS off the gound ;) Secondly, been having lots of weird issues from folders being out of sync from the server to folders just being empty, I've tried making a debug dump but the client freezes. This is over multiple macOS versions, some are x86 and some are arm. Any ideas? (Feel like at my wits ends) |

Hello,
I'm opening this thread to gather feedback about the File provider-based VFS beta since discussion is still being held in a now-closed issue.
Please feel free to leave any feedback here :)
The latest version of the macOS VFS Beta (3) can be found in the link below:
Nextcloud macOS VFS Beta 3 (hotfix 1) download
A couple of details (please read these):
The macOS VFS Beta is still a beta! We are providing it publically in order to gather feedback and bug reports, but we do not recommend you use it on production instances! This is an entirely new sync engine that has not been rigorously tested and is under active development. Use at your own risk!
The macOS virtual files system is specific to macOS (based on native File Provider APIs provided by Apple) and different from the VFS implementation that is stable on Windows and experimental on Linux (based on .nextcloud files).
File Provider
-based virtual files folders are accessible through the "Locations" section of your Finder sidebar.nextcloud
-based VFS implementation is still accessible by settingshowExperimentalOptions=true
in your Nextcloud client configuration file, but is explicitly unsupported and untested, and will likely be disabled in the future on macOS.The
File Provider
module is not enabled by default, as it is still experimental -- even in the VFS Beta package. Please setmacFileProviderModuleEnabled=true
in your Nextcloud configuration file to enable it, and restart your client if it is running to make the change take effect. If you installed the VFS Beta distributed as
Nextcloud-stable-3.10-fileprovider.pkg
-- which will show up in your applications as just "Nextcloud" -- we recommend you allow all ongoing synchronisation to finish and to then upgrade to the latest version of the stable client, either through the update prompt or by downloading the latest stable package manually. This will return your normal "Nextcloud" application to the stable version. To test the VFS Beta please install the latest "macOS VFS Beta" package distributed near the top of this, which will install a separately-branded version of the Nextcloud client that will not interfere with your stable Nextcloud application (this will show up as "Nextcloud macOS VFS Beta" in your applications)Beta Was this translation helpful?
