Add Account Button & Ability to Switch Between Nextcloud Accounts (Web Version)

Currently, there is no straightforward way to switch between multiple Nextcloud accounts within the web interface. This feature request proposes adding an "Account Button" to the Nextcloud web version, which will allow users to easily switch between their Nextcloud accounts without needing to log out and log back in.

Use Case:

Many users manage multiple Nextcloud instances (e.g., personal and work accounts) and would benefit from the ability to seamlessly switch between them without interrupting their workflow. This feature would increase productivity and provide a smoother user experience for those with multiple accounts.

Proposed Solution:

1. Add a user-friendly Account Button in the web interface (e.g., in the top right corner).
2. Clicking the Account Button would show a dropdown or modal listing the user's Nextcloud accounts.
3. Users would be able to select an account from the list, and the interface would automatically switch to that account.
4. Optionally, include the ability to add/remove accounts directly from the dropdown or modal interface.
5. The switch should preserve session data where possible (e.g., avoiding the need to re-enter credentials for linked accounts).

Benefits:

• Enhanced User Experience: Users can switch accounts with just a click, making it easier to manage personal and work accounts.
• Increased Productivity: No more logging out and back in, which saves time.
• Convenience: Smooth account management within the Nextcloud web interface.

But several instances would have a different url. They would not be visible in the same interface. Use case for a switch account button would be to have multiple user accounts for one person on one single instance. And the only time i have that is when i am admin and have a separate user account.

I always switch between accounts in Google Workspace, it should work with any instance, automatically detect.

But for google workspace you have them in the same system. If you have several nextcloud instances you have several admin urls with several different user databases that have no relation to eachother. I have well over 100 nextcloud accounts but all have their own url to authenticate to. Not even in the same server room. My private instance and my company instances has no relation to each other. The only systems i have two accounts on is where admin and user account are separated. Normally i open a separate browser for the admin auth (even in the many google workspaces i have access too)

I understand, but Nextcloud is clusterable, at least with external auth provider app i am sure it's possible, but I refer to only same instance switch account not when you have multiple instances and different URLs.

You could set one nextcloud instance and scale it, i guess you using AIO version. You should setup your own cluster to be able to use one instance hostname.

Anyway, I refer to the same instance multi account feature.

That clarifies a bit. That is a usecase for the same instance/domain. I have several like that setup as well. 99% of my company customers wants isolation form others and not share information with others. So my clusters has several different nextcloud instances in the same cluster but userdatabase and file storage separation. For home users this might be a feature.

When setting up nextcloud instance, every NC has access to the other NC when it's on the same instance? I saw settings there which allows you to isolate the data if i am not wrong so ge can see only his dats(each NC user).

you can isolate on groups. So you can search outside of your own group on the same instance. But all information are in the same database, same nextcloud data directory and so forth.

Yes this is know, I usually create user and group for the isolation. I have a different kind of business. I am an email provider, I add workspace features on top of my email solution. Switching accounts and instance isolation is very important for me.

My NC users are email accounts actually, and I am using oauth2 to login to NC with my email accounts.

The only problem is the Switching accounts, I have like 25000 different domains and names, approximately, each customer has 40 email accounts.

I thought to shift to NC but I find it not suitable without Switching accounts.

The desktop app and mobile apps are designed to connect to several different instances with different accounts on different urls. When you add an extra account you specify what url it should connect to. (My phone has 5 completely different instances connected)

I see, would be nice the same function at least with the web version as well.

Do you think it's possible to create a custom app for this feature? Which will add an extra menu item in the drop down menu?
