i3/sway vertical and horizontal split modes?

My workflow in i3/sway has always been to use vertical/horizontal split, and then open a new terminal/program/whatever that way to position it immediately. Is there an equivalent to the split vertical|horizontal in AeroSpace?

I, too, am looking for exactly this. Did you, by chance, figure this out?

It is the split command vs the join-with command. I just configured it.
