Downloaded the latest version from this site https://sourceforge.net/projects/vboxvmservice/files/ and installed it.

When I try to start the service, I get the following error message in the even log:

The VBoxVmService service is marked as an interactive service. However, the system is configured to not allow interactive services. This service may not function properly.

How can I get around this?

Don't run it as interactive, and just change the user account that the service runs under to be your own account that you want to use the Dekstop GUI with. Then you can use both the service and the GUI to access/start/stop VM's
