Multiple acceptance tests are broken on Windows

#1181 includes Windows in CI, but disabled acceptance tests due to numerous failures. For now, we have skipped those tests, but we should understand why and resolve these.

Thanks for creating this issue and for all the work on PR #1181 and for opening this issue. I really appreciate the effort to improve Windows support for Conftest.

I've spent some time investigating the acceptance test failures on Windows and would love to contribute fixes if you're open to it.

From my analysis, the failures seem to stem from a few specific areas - primarily path handling differences and shell command dependencies. The good news is that these appear to be solvable without any negative impact on the existing Linux and macOS tests.

If it's alright with you, I'd like to propose fixing these issues through a series of small, focused pull requests. This would make the changes easier to review and ensure we maintain quality throughout the process. I'd start with some basic infrastructure improvements (adding cross-platform helper functions) and then address each category of failures systematically.

Of course, I'm completely open to your feedback on this approach. If you'd prefer a different strategy or have specific concerns, I'd be happy to adjust accordingly. Your guidance on what would work best for the project would be invaluable.
