Description

Hello.
There is no mention of these watches on iot.mi.com since, if I understand correctly, they were never released on a local market and are only sold for global market. There are a lot of speculations on forums about the software of these watches, I'd like to get an answer from a more reliable source, if they have Vela OS on board or if they have another OS that is not compatible with Vela?

Will it be possible to run apps made for Vela Os on Redmi Watch 5 Lite/Active series?

Redmi Watch 5 Lite/Active runs on Xiaomi HyperOS.

Relationship between Xiaomi Vela, openvela, and Xiaomi HyperOS:

  1. Xiaomi Vela serves as a key enabling technology for Xiaomi HyperOS. This time, it is open-sourced independently from Xiaomi HyperOS.
  2. Openvela and Xiaomi Vela share the same code implementation, and are developed synchronously inside and outside, evolving together with the community.

Can Redmi Watch 5 Lite/Active run Xiaomi Vela/openvela applications?

  1. Redmi Watch 5 Lite/Active contains Xiaomi Vela system, theoretically it is capable of running Xiaomi Vela applications;
  2. However, overseas wearable APP currently does not have an "App Store", and cannot be installed directly through "App Store";
  3. We welcome you to become a Xiaomi Vela JS developer. After becoming a developer, you can install it through the whitelist and specific version of the Xiaomi Sports Health app.

Bullshit, as RW5A, as RW5L has cheap chipset on board and has no VelaOS on boards, no apps, no anything cool

@aiduxiaoxiong thanks a lot for clarification. Looks like one of the developers of modded versions of the Mi Fitness App who ported a lot of software and watchfaces to different watches has joined the discussion and has a different opinion. I think it's better for the community to communicate with respect and avoid rude replicas, but his point is that there is no support for JS apps because of the hardware specifications of the chipset.

The only way to see if there is, is to try to install them via the officially provided instructions.
Could you please clarify how to become a whitelisted developer and if this is possible to do for people overseas? I found at least two links (login page on https://iot.mi.com/ and https://iot.mi.com/vela/quickapp/zh/guide/publish/) and I'm not sure what are the next steps.

I think these watches have a lot of potential for developers even if their hardware has more limitations than more powerful devices, but if there is not enough resources to run the system components that allow to run applications made with Vela JS that would be disappointing. Anyways, I appreciate the fact that you decided to open source Vela and bring developers to contribute to the ecosystem.

@remixer-dec We have understood your needs. We will try to develop the "Developer Mode". We will communicate with you once we have a preliminary plan. Please wait patiently for a while.
