in guidelines there is preserve_egg_dir: True. I thought that we did not need egg anymore.

The point here is not about egg, it is about compressing the package.
When you have this flag, the package is decompressed at installation and represented as a directory.
And it impacts access to data files...
So YES to remove it. ng before to understand the exact impact
But we need intensive test it.
