This release will be focused on ensuring a smooth path from GeoParquet 1.1 to embracing of the new [Geography and Geometry logical types in Parquet](https://github.com/apache/parquet-format/pull/240). The process of core Parquet tooling adopting the new types will be slow, so the goal for GeoParquet 2.0 will be to recommend the use of the native types but ensure that everything that GeoParquet 1.1 supplies is available to readers. It requires a 2.0 as it's a breaking change, but the goal will be to have the same set of functionality as 1.1, so for most implementations it should not actually be a major upgrade.
