Consolidate online-viewer and embedded-gui functionality

Work progressed on the embed-gui branch introduced features that were needed by the application that would also be handy for the online viewer. Some refactoring would be necessary for the integration. Some specific tasks included as sub-issues

@AlbertoCasasOrtiz this the place holder epic we discussed. Let me know where you want to start as I continue testing/refining the GUI branch. The integration of the gui-embed branch was done in the ci build script, I can test whatever refactoring you propose. Thank you
