Description of issue

Installation of x265 fails with the following last 15 lines in the log:

-- Detecting CXX compile features
-- Detecting CXX compile features - done
CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:20 (cmake_minimum_required):
  Compatibility with CMake < 3.5 has been removed from CMake.

  Update the VERSION argument <min> value.  Or, use the <min>...<max> syntax
  to tell CMake that the project requires at least <min> but has been updated
  to work with policies introduced by <max> or earlier.

  Or, add -DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM=3.5 to try configuring anyway.

There are other CMake errors related to OLD policy, so this seems to be an issue related to CMake 4.0 and up. The solution appears to be setting the version arguments for CMake, but it isn't immediately clear in the x265.rb file where to do this.

I think the best fix is a patch upstream that resolves this.

Looks like this is already being tracked in x265: https://bitbucket.org/multicoreware/x265_git/issues/986/macos-build-from-main-currently-broken. I've added a reply indicating that this will affect any x265 build from source (or where x265 is a dependency) due to Homebrew moving to CMake 4.0+.

x265 project indicates issue #986 is fixed in the master branch (b354c00), and apparently a compiler ID issue also related to #986 was also fixed (51ae8e9). Not sure how long that may take to propagate downstream.

x265 has patched upstream. brew install --fetch-HEAD x265 should now pull the patches, although a forced purge of any downloads from previous failed installs might be needed.
