Monetization Strategies

Even though I don't have a clear goal with the project, there might be some potential monetization paths ahead. Having a sustainable Funding Models is key and running large-scale data infrastructure requires significant resources (servers, engineers, etc.).

• Make itsimilar to the GitHub model with free public datasets but paid private options.
• Grants.
  • Gitcoin. Open Data Community could help.
  • Filecoin/IPFS Grants. Datasets could be archived to IPFS/Filecoin both for resiliency and because it'll be cheap.
• Consulting. For example, creating open data portals for cooperatives and organizations.
• Selling curated datasets. Specially, win at the edge (small curated data) where big companies can't compete.
  • Selling private datasets is something that will make that company want to do more and more. E.g: data.world and opencorporates. Not sure if sustainable long term without sacrificing opennes and other values.
  • Data marketplaces make certain datasets get produced as people "buy them into existence". The platform should make putting a price tag on any dataset as easy and smooth as possible. Perhaps the focus is not as much on Open Data but on getting data into people's hand, even if that means paying for some datasets (so the entire pipeline is sustainable).
• Participating in data bounties.
• Have a community like Substack/Pinterest/Are.na where people contribute datasets and there is a fee.
• Providing Smart Data Augmentation as a service.
• Create a token based incentive system where a fraction of the fees of the network usage goes to these platforms (like Optimism does). Complex, but might work well with a Data Coop or Data DAO.
• Build a business around private data, but have awesome tooling that also works fantastically for open data, which might be the smart route.

Recently learned that Nebula (video streaming platform owned by the creators) is distributing 50% of the equity to the creators.

That might be another path forward!

The NLnet Foundation supports organisations and people who contribute to an open internet for all and might be a great entity to reach for potential funding.

Also, the Open Science Grants from The Navigation Fund, Omydiar, or Codevelop Fund, could be other sources.
