I added my workspace directory to the monorepo repository using pnpm add XXX -w, but it went to the npm registry to find it. Why is that?

I am not sure what you mean. XXX is the name of the package that is part of the workspace? In that case the pnpm add XXX -w command should add it as a dependency to the root package.json in the workspace. -w is short for --workspace-root.
