Doks: Noteworthy "competitors" for inspiration

I think it makes sense to have a discussion thread to collect information about other noteworthy projects with +/- the same goal as Doks (there are quite a bunch out there).

The idea is to have a separate comment per project, so we can keep further discussion about a particular project bundled as replies to the respective comment.

Material for MkDocs

General

• A theme for the static site generator MkDocs. MkDocs is written in Python and thus considerably slower than Hugo.
• Adheres to the Material design language.
• There was a port of an early version of Material for MkDocs to Hugo, named Material Docs. It is not maintained anymore and the repository is archived.
• Licensed under MIT

Highlights

• It dogfeeds its own software to create a seemingly very comprehensive documentation that adhere's to good documentation practices.

Docusaurus

General

• A static site generator (SSG) on its own, built in TypeScript. Thus, significantly slower than Hugo.
• While Doks can concentrate on documentation-specific functionality, Docusaurus devs have to build every additional SSG feature by themselves (blog functionality for example). Totally inefficient approach.
• Licensed under MIT

Highlights

• Backed by Facebook, thus has paid developers who can spend a lot of time reinventing the wheel.

Furo

General

• A theme for the Sphinx documentation generator, a specialized static site generator for software documentation, originated in the Python ecosystem. Sphinx is written in Python and thus considerably slower than Hugo.
• Licensed under MIT
