Trouble getting boot counting to work

I added boot counting via ostree config set sysroot.boot-counting-tries 3 and ostree config get sysroot.boot-counting-tries correctly returns 3, but it does not seem to do anything. Maybe it's related to sd-boot being on the efi partition and not the /boot partition?

Could you please elaborate what you mean? When you run ostree admin deploy, the newly created boot loader entry conf file doesn't have a correct suffix (which represents the amount of tries)?

How did you test this feature?
