During today's steering council meeting, the idea of forming an Advisory Council was floated. The discussion centered around finding ways to encourage participation in the Pangeo Project by members of organizations that provide data and infrastructure services as well as funding streams. Examples of such organizations would be:

  • Federal data agencies (NASA, NOAA, USGS)
  • Funding institutions (NSF, Moore Foundation)
  • Cloud providers (AWS, Google, Microsoft, etc.)

A clear distinction between the Advisory Council and Steering Council would be possible based on the definition of a Contributor in our governance document (Advisory Council members would not be defined Contributors).

What would be the role of the Advisory Council?

Give some high level orientation to Pangeo? Share their needs?

What would be the role of the Advisory Council?

Ideas: advise Pangeo applications/developments related to their organizations, share needs, foster/federate institutional ownership (buy-in, not governance), project advocacy...
