how do i specify MPIRUN with tests?

I am on a Ubuntu machine where the path to the _right_ MPI implementations are `mpicc.mpich` and `mpirun.mpich`.  I cannot figure out how to get the tests to use the latter, as the environment variable `MPIRUN` doesn't do anything.  I can't even see where this is set in `tests/Makefile`...
