using AI for tag suggestions?

This is kind of convoluted, it's not really needed; to be honest. But, I think something like this can encourage more users to utilize tags.

The way I'd think to approach this, would be to take 30-40 maps each of various skillsets; whether it'd be aim, stream, tech, etc.. Then have someone annotate the raw map file. You would use characters foreign to the .osu file, then highlight specific sections that are examples of things like simple rhythm, sharp aim, jumps, etc..

Then you would run it through either a very inexpensive LLM, or even better something locally hosted. Like a Qwen or Deepseek model with low parameters. With instructions detailing how .osu files work, how the annotations work, etc.. Would probably cost a penny per map, if even.

Below is a screenshot of how these automated tags would be differentiated. Not necessarily the prettiest, but the whole score screen needs to get reworked. So I did just enough for y'all to get a rough idea. There should be a footer indicating that the following tags are automated.

I respect that. I don’t know, it feels like it would be kind of beneficial, though. It’s not generating slop code, it’d be reading patterns and acting as a glorified autofill. To each their own.

We already have this kind of algorithmic distinctions in difficulty calculation. There's a chance we'd display this kind of information in statistics form at song select (ie the classic "spider web" graph that people have been asking for for a while).
