During the kickoff meeting, Indiana said Zotero and Mendelay are more interesting than EndNote or RefWorks as export formats.

Touch base with Penn State - they are have added these two export formats to Scholarsphere.

Zotero can extract embedded metadata, so this functionality would best be served by appropriately tagging information within a single item's show view. For folder export, it might be necessary to create a zotero 'translator' that aggregated the metadata from the items in the folder:

Mendeley is a cloud based reference manager now owned by Elsevier. There is an api as well as a web importer that support COinS format embedded metadata.
