error: read timeout when executing from automation - manually run actions from automation succeeds

hi all,

i know this might sound odd - and i am not pretty sure if this is the right place to fill (could probably be more a ha issue)

i am running HA at the following version:

Installation method Home Assistant OS
Core 2025.6.0
Supervisor 2025.05.5
Operating System 15.2
Frontend 20250531.2

Gardena Smart System is at 1.3.0-beta4 - and i changed from switches to valves.

I have an automation which should start watering the yard - when ever this automation is triggerd i see the follwoing issue in the traces:

one could say the is a temporary issue - but it is not - i observed this a couple of times ... every time it runs by trigger it has read timeout...

There is another thread with the (as far as I can see) the same issue: #214

I also experience this error.

The problem is that the time out is not classified as a home assistant error which could be handled. There are many other integrations which have a similar time out issue and retry the connection after receiving the specific error.
I posted a code snipped which led to a solution for these integrations, however, I'm not able to create a PR for this integration.

@ChrisHomeAssistant I am not a python dev - but think I understood what you were describing in the other issue. And I dare to create a PR for this... but: 😆

I see two problems:

• the PR would - obviously - be applied to 1.3.0-beta5 which is broken
• I am not sure if anyone will ever accept the PR

I don't know how ell maintained this integration really is - my assumption is not. but nevertheless we can give it a shot

My Workaround for this issue (Apple User):

• Remove Gardena Gateway Bridge from Apple Home
• Connect the Gateway directly to Home Assistant (shows automatically as new device after removing from Apple Home)
• Gardena Device (in my Case Water Control) shows up as separate Device and can be switched on/off manually or via automation without the dependency from Husqvarna API
• Optional: If you still want to control the Gardena devices via Apple Home, you can use HAs HomeKit Bridge to push them to Apple Home. It shows as switch and not as valve but i don´t care.

It´s working for me and i don´t miss any features. Am i missing something? I don´t know if this only works when the gateway was a Bridge in HomeKit once or if it shows up as device in HA as soon as it´s connected to the home network.

interesting workaround, good to hear that you found something that works for you.
However, I've never used the gateway in Apple Home and yet have these issues.
It was also the case I exhibited in the other thread. For some users a certain workaround works perfectly stable within a specific setup, for others it doesn't.

The issues with this specific hass-gardena-smart-system plugin have nothing to do with Apple Home. My workaround simply describes a completely different way to control the Gardena devices independently of this plugin.

Even though I really appreciate that someone has taken the effort to develop this specific plugin, the way via the Homekit integration in HA seems to me to be much more obvious and reliable, doesn't it? Being an Apple User i can´t tell if the Gardena Bridge shows up as a device in HA as soon as it´s connected to home network or if it had to be connected to HomeKit at least once (which would require lending an Apple TV or Homepod from a friend or amazon)

I just have it connected to HomeAssistant threw this plugin. HomeKit is not Showing the Gateway to me :(

@DerBaerFreddy No when i got my gardena bridge, i connected it directly to Homekit (added to homekit using my iPhone and the Sticker on the backside of the gateway).

To add the gardena bridge as a homekit Device directly in HA just as shown in my screenshot, you have to remove the bridge in Homekit and as soon as i did that, the device showed immediately up as a new device in HA (Settings -> Devices) so now i don´t need this hass plugin anymore.

@vwx089 oh - that's great - I just added it do home kit and removed it directly again. as you said it instantly showd up in HA and I added it. changed my automation from the valves in this integration to the switches that come from the home kit integration... hopefully I can tell tomorrow if this solved the issues for me as well ... I guess I will then stick with the home kit integration. only downside: the mower isn't supported - but actually I do not have any automation so I guess I can go without that.

@kimpenhaus Glad to hear.

If you want to have a valve shown instead of a switch, you could go to the HA-settings of the entity and change "show as" to valve. It will then create a copy of the original entity (switch) and hides the original. I did that because i push it back to Apple Home via HAs HomeKit Bridge and the Valves have other icons in Apple Home so i can separate the valves better from the lights and other devices.
