Description
What are you missing?
With the proposed Experimental Variable Update, the user is only shown the edit button if an experimental group has already been defined.
Even if the user tries to locate the "add variable" button within the dialog (as is possible if no group has been defined), the button is simply hidden if a group has been defined.
See Comparison
1.) With an Experimental Group defined within the experiment
2.) Without an Experimental Group defined within the experiment:
Why do you need a solution?
The User has no Possibility to understand why he cannot add variables as soon as a group has been defined, since he is able to update variable names and unused levels.
This suggests that the user can interact with the variables in some capacity even after groups are defined further enhancing this dissonance.
Ideas
The previous implementation had a distinct add button, which when pressed informed the user that as long as an experimental group was defined, the user is unable to add new variables. Maybe a simliar solution could be chosen?
