It appears to be a compatibility issue with ggplot2 4.0.1. I was able to resolve it by downgrading ggplot2 to 4.0.0, even though my rlang was 1.1.6.

This problem has been discussed on Stack Overflow, including a comment from rlang developer @DavisVaughan:

Something seems broken with your rlang installation. Try running remove.packages("rlang"), then restart R, then install.packages("rlang"), then restart R again for safety, then try again.

Which operating system do you use? Some others suggest the issue might be related to Rtools, which would make it specific to Windows.

NB: If people keep experiencing this problem, maybe it would be good for rlang or ggplot2 to respond to it. Even if Rtools is at the root, this is not obvious, and what people see is a ggplot2 / rlang error.

I believe this is an unfortunate result of ggplot2 accidentally (at least I don't think it was on purpose) capturing rlang::list2()'s definition at ggplot2 build time.

I have documented this issue here tidyverse/ggplot2#6796, we will try and get out a ggplot2 release soon that fixes this.

I believe if you do the following, you can get back up and running:

• remove.packages("rlang")

• Restart R to be safe

• install.packages("rlang")

• Restart R to be safe

• Try your code again

That should put you on rlang 1.1.7, which has ffi_list2.

I believe this is going to be resolved in ggplot2, not rlang, so I'm going to close this so we can focus on that issue.
